House votes to cut $700 mln in food stamps
Let me tell you as someone who has utilized the Foodstamp program, that this is highly disappointing. For those not familiar with foodstamps let me make one thing really clear--you have to be poor, I mean really poor, before you even qualify. After I had Turtle, her father left and I was stuck. I got a job making $5.35 an hour, working about 35 hours a week. That is $187.25 a week--before taxes. I had a child-care bill of $50/wk. Child-Support (Chsup, for short) was $50/wk. Gas for the car, $20/wk. Laundry soap, bath soap, TP, shampoo, etc. cost about $20 a week. OK, now let's subtract the taxes ($37.45, assuming a 20% dedution.) So, let's see, 187.25-50-50-20-20-37.45=9.80
Wait. $9.80 a week? Left over? What?! And we have yet to pay rent, utilities, or buy food. My Foodstamp benefit at this time? $137--a month. And god forbid one of us got sick! Or I had a flat tire, or we ripped a hole in the only pair of jeans we had, or the fridge went out and our 1 gallon of milk spoiled. I mean, seriously...think of how much your grocery bill is a week and what that buys you.
That this is seriously going to happen is beyond me. I mean, Cheese and Rice!!! It's appalling, really. They take away our childrens education by cutting programs and instituting assinine programs like 'No Child Left Behind', and the hits just keep on coming! They want us to belive that they don't want us to be poor, but they do, by not raising minimum wage, by cutting programs that are beneficial to helping the next generation overcome poverty. They want us to believe that they empathize with us, but they truly do not. And that is a shame.
